Maleic anhydride is a colorless crystal with a strong pungent odor. Its freezing point is 52.8°C, boiling point is 202°C, and it sublimes easily. It is mainly prepared by oxidation of n-butane or butene in benzene or C4 fraction. It is the raw material for the production of unsaturated polyester and organic synthesis.

Colorless orthogonal needle crystal or white crystalline powder. Soluble in water, acetone, benzene, chloroform and other organic solvents. Solubility in the following solvents at 25°C (glow): acetone 227, ethyl acetate 112, chloroform 52.5 I, benzene 50 I, toluene 23.4; O-xylene 19.4; Carbon tetrachloride 0 60; Petroleum ether 0.25. Dissolve in alcohol to form an ester. Soluble in dioxane sublimated by heat. In case of high heat, open fire or contact with oxidant may cause combustion.

Maleic anhydride is hydrogenated, used in the production of thermoplastic polyurethanes, elastane/spandex fibers, polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resins, and many other products.


Another market for maleic anhydride is in lubricating oil additives used in gasoline and diesel engine crankcase oils as dispersants and corrosion inhibitors. Changes in lubricant specifications and more efficient engines have negatively impacted demand for lubricating oil additives, creating a flat growth outlook for maleic anhydride in this application.

The food industry uses malic acid, which is derived from maleic anhydride, in artificial sweeteners and flavor enhancements. Personal care products that use maleic anhydride include hair sprays, adhesives, and floor polishes. Maleic anhydride is also a precursor to compounds used in water treatment detergents, insecticides and fungicides, pharmaceuticals, and other copolymers.
